Hey, This Cake Tastes Like Cardboard!
July 31, 2012 We've all been there: you order something special, wait weeks for it to arrive, and then discover the hard way that you're allergic to latex. Dang it.
My point is, we've all faced disappointment. And itchiness. But mostly disappointment.
Case in point: Eagle-eyed wreckporter Leigh attended a graduation party last month where the cake turned out to be, well...a little dry.
First the hostess commented how hard the cake was, as she couldn't get a balloon pick to stick into the cake
Then they tried to cut it.
Emphasis on tried:
Hey. Waaaaait a second. Is that...?
IT IS!
It's a frosted cardboard box!
This would be a brilliant prank, of course, if it hadn't come straight out of the refrigerated display at their local big-chain store bakery (you can see the price tag in the first photo). OOPSIE. I guess now we know where all those display cakes end up!
A big thank you to Leigh W. for forever redefining "box mix." You know, between this and that time Amy found a pair of scissors in her birthday cake, I'm starting to see why some folks prefer homemade.

I... I can't even. I'm hoping this was a result of someone being thrown into the bakery that didn't know you couldn't just sell cakes out of the display case... Yes, I'm going to go with that.

OMG! You used my pic and it only took me 2 1/2 years to notice. I read this blog everyday. I don't know how I missed it! Very exciting. If anyone has questions, feel free to email me. I will be glad to answer which store, etc...LOL
Oh boy. Well that's one way to get rid of some cardboard lol. I do hope this person got a refund for her troubles. At least I hope they got a good laugh out of this. At least it looked nice didn't it? Lol.
Hey, that was our party! The cake was brought by a guest - completely unplanned. When it came thru the door with a relative, I was upset because I had contracted Leigh W. to make homemade cupcakes and didn't want her to think we were doubting here expertise in the business.
Anyway, it was hilarious. As the day went on, all the women eventually were called in to the cake table to try and figure it out. Then we tried to figure out if the relative "knew" and it was a joke. Since none of us were brave enough to ask him, we all decided that we would just let things unfold as scheduled.
Turns out, he did not. My son, the graduate was not in on it and when he couldn't "cut it", the relative got up to help and that's when the entire room erupted in laughter.
The 'relative' did not return it out of embarrassment.
Thanks to Leigh W. we had some wonderful homemade cupcakes, the 'box cake' will always be a remembrance of the day and THANKS Cake Wrecks for sharing our photos with the world!
I have to wonder if that cake was paid for. When I still worked for the world's largest retailer, we had one of the Ugliest display cakes turn up missing. A few days later a customer tried to return it for money back, claiming we sold them a display. I like to think of them smiling at their stolen cake, people gathered around only to get that Styrofoam squeal as the knife sunk in.
I'm sorry, but I work for Costco. This cake may have been a dummy cake, but it did not get sold. That is not a sales tag it is a item display tag that lets members know the item number, item discription and item price. So someone is just being funny. Actually when I saw the picture I thought the front flap of the box had come up and took the whole side of the cake up, That has happened. I love this site. But you have to remember alot of this is purposely done for our entertainment. Keep"em coming. By the way I love the signature cake with the Costco carrot cake that someone decorated with the babies. I guess they forgot they were having a baby shower and had to pick up a Costco one on the fly. Oh you would be surprised at some of the order forms we have to read, so it is not always the decorator that is at fault. We just follow what the member writes down.
I am saying epic fail for the cake purchaser. Wouldn't you notice that the cake wasn't heavy enough? An empty box doesn't weigh the same as a 1/4 sheet cake!!!
i actually work for the big box company that sells those cakes. those cakes are clearly marked display cakes only but we have at least one person every day buy one. also as a side note there is a huge weight difference btwn the box cake and a real cake
This was NOT an intention joke - it really happened! This is life folks. It was our cake, bought by a 60-year old bachelor uncle for his nephews graduation. So, although most of us females might have noticed the 'weight' difference, he did not.
And yes, he BOUGHT it. Costco SOLD it to him, so maybe the cashier should have noticed!
Doesn't matter. We all had a gut wrenching, laughter filled day and after the Uncle got past the embarrassment we now realize that he has now created a memory which will probably live on for generations to come. No one in our small group of friends and family can say "box cake" without laughing.
If someone sent their husband in for the cake, I can understand them coming out with this not noticing that the cake was "light." My husband is not into cooking or baking or anything and he would not notice. He would notice if I sent him in to pick up a cordless drill and the box was missing the drill....lol...but the cake...I don't think he'd notice. he doesn't handle whole cakes often enough, lol
