What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Doctor Who

I'm proud to say that I was raised by geeks. Star Trek and Doctor Who were staples in my household, and when I was little my folks even bundled me and my brother off to a Doctor Who event where I got to meet the late Jon Pertwee. At the time, of course, I was more impressed with the full-scale model of the TARDIS control room where I got to push ALL the buttons. Anyhoo, naturally it was only a matter of time until I found enough Whovian Sweets to justify a post. Ready? Here we go...

Presenting the most scrumptious looking Cyberman you will ever see:

Made by Truly Scrumptious Designer Cakes, appropriately enough.

There's nothing more iconic than the TARDIS:

Found by Emily S. on diongillard's Flickr stream.

Here's one honoring my parents' favorite Doctor, Tom Baker:
Made by abbietabbie

This next on isn't actually cake; it's gingerbread. And K9 is looking suh-weet.

Found by Eric G, & made by LiveJournal member Therru

Lastly, here are some shops that know just how to dress a display window:

Posted on The Gallifreyan Embassy, but the bakery isn't listed.

Hannah C. found this display at The Cake Shop in Liverpool.

I don't know about you guys, but I would *totally* shop there. Why don't we have displays like this here in the States?

Update from john: This photo just came in from Leigh Henderson of theyrecoming.com. (She's the maker of the infamous thorax cake, so click the link at your own risk!)

Yup. It's cake. And no, she's not a professional. I can't believe it either. But that's not all...

It has an inside! She did it with mirrors and LEDs. Wow. Freakin' wow. (See more insanely detailed progress shots here.)

And did I mention wow?

I love you so much for these!

Sorry, had to comment .... Dion (second cake) was a friend of mine. He would've loved that this made it onto your blog.

He passed away last year from melanoma. Watch your skin and get suspicious things checked out, folks.

That is amazing! Thank you thank you thank you!

Oh, these are just too cool!

I was just doing my daily check of the site before settling down to a rainy afternoon marathon of 10th Doctor Who. How coincidental and awesome! Methinks there's some timey whimey business going on here. Or maybe someone reversed the polarity on my computer at just the right moment.

Now, off to the Ood planet...

(p.s. The scarf caught in the door of the TARDIS? Too cute! I'm young enough that Ten is my Doctor, but I love Tom Baker's Doctor as well.)

Thank you for sharing. The Tom Baker scarf cake is wonderful!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterOld Fashion Halloween

Those are awesome! But Tom Baker's Dalek needs to lay off the cookies...

I thought I was a geek, but alas, I am not. Trekkie stuff I get, but I have never seen or even heard of Doctor Who. BUT, I would SO take a big chomp out of those cakes and even the gingerbread. Yummy pup. Now, off to google Dr. Who...

Oh, happy, happy Who day! In our family's experience, Dr. Who is vastly underappreciated here in the US, which is a pity. My boys really like both Tom Baker and David Tennant as Doctors, but Tennant is the one I'd travel through time and space with. Kinda sad to see him leaving. Anyway, I made not one but two TARDIS cakes for my oldest boy's last birthday, one for practice and one for real. They're not easy to do, and I'll probably never do it again. Thanks for a brilliant Sunday Sweets!

Those cakes are all bloody amazing. I LOVE DR. WHO!!!!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDebbie Culpepper

Defo Martha - her icing face just came up a wee bit pale. You can tell it's her in the enlarged image.

Oods make me feel sick. Luckily David Tennant is tasty in all his configurations.

You know what would make a great cake? The Adipose babies...firstly, because they're cute. And secondly, because too much cake can make you fat and they're made out of...well...fat.

I love these sweets! I have been a fan of Dr Who for a short time but I love it and these cakes are AWEsome!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeray

I LOVE YOU JEN!!!! My husband and I are huge Doctor Who fans- it was what first brought us together, eventually leading us to having a Doctor Who themed wedding. With David Tennant's Doctor and Rose cake toppers and ALL.

You made my day. Honestly. :)

Love it! Doctor Who meets Cakewrecks! I'm the only one in my circle of friends who loves the Doctor, so it's nice seeing some more fans here in the US.

I have been a Doctor Who fan for as long as I can remember. We used to watch Tom Baker on Saturday afternoons. My husband was never very interested, until the "new" series came out. We're both completely hooked. We've just been watching the latest Torchwood miniseries, and waiting impatiently for Doctor Who to start up again. These cakes are amazing!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

For all of my nerdiness I don't know anything about Doctor Who. But those are awesome cakes!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

Oh my gosh! Love love love today's post!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterveiledrose

Hee! These are brilliant. I love the little scarf poking out of the TARDIS.

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJasmine

Awesome cakes. That lase cake is pretty cool. The Ood and the angels from Blink. Nice. The Tom Baker Dalek looks like it partook of a bit too much cake, but I still love it. The Fourth Doctor was when I started watching. David Tennant rocks, though. I'm sad to see him leaving. Many awesome eps during his current stint.

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterYankee1969

I'm so ashamed to point this out because it shows how big of a nerd I am. At least I'm in good company.

On that last cake, the Ood rock, but shouldn't the Weeping Angel be covering it's eyes? It is being observed, after all.

d'oh!

I think this is my favorite Sunday Sweets yet.

I was destined to be a Doctor Who fan from the instant my parents named me Teagan Rebekah (after Tegan Jovanka)...

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersarcasm397

Thanks for posting the Doctor Who cakes! I just got back from a very long weekend at GenCon, and there were many Doctor Who sightings (last night I played a round of Are You a Werewolf? with Tom Baker himself...kind of) and an entire booth dedicated to merchandise, so these cakes fell at an appropriate time. :)

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Ah, that K-9 was a labour of love and pain. I have a nice battlescar from a sugar accident during the assembly process.

Geeky cakes are the best!

And I feel so honoured to be featured here with mine and therru's work.

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPocki

Love this.

I would, however, be wary of eating an Abzorbaloff...

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnthrophile

this is your best post EVER!!!!!!! thanks!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I would definitely buy the cake with David Tennant on it. YUMMY!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Wow that cyberman is amazing & the fact that it's all ebible too! I'm pretty certain that the Dalek is from Imaginative Icing in York. Check out the awesome models they made http://www.imaginativeicing.co.uk/cele_doctor_who_friends.html
I've also seen a gingerbread tardis on lj & it gives you instructions on how to make it. I'm so happy you finally did a Dr Who Sunday Sweets. Thanx

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLynz

It's a Weeping Angel!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The Sunday Sweets frequently make my day, but never so much as when they are themed with geeky goodness! And Doctor Who is among the best of the geeky goodness out there. Thank you so much for sharing--love, love, love that Tom Baker TARDIS and that shop window.

WOW Best ever cakes, thanks so much for sharing

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKeren

:D I remember the Tom Baker Dr. Who when I was a kid. And yes, Star Trek was a staple in our house too!

(((((HUGS)))))

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGoof

I almost made a TARDIS bridal shower cake for a dear friend. Unfortunately I ran out of time and made her a big chocolate cake with large red friendly letters on it that said "DON'T PANIC!".

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

YES!!! I have been waiting -yearning- for a Who themed Sunday Sweets for such a long time! I am a dedicated Whovian, and feel the series is underappreciated in the US, where I currently reside.
Just yesterday I had an all-day Doctor Who marathon with friends! Unbelievable timing!
Thank youuuuu!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTomLehrerLover

Also, i LOVE the Ood and the Weeping Angel! ...and the Dalek. AHH I love it all!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterkerry

wow these are amazing. I wan't a Dr. Who cake!!!

I have a pic of David Tennant with a tiny Dalek cake in his hand on my blog from a few years back as well. (it isn't loading rt. noe for some reason but will leave link anyway) I love the creativity. :D

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersusurro

Oh my god, you are totally psychic! My birthday was yesterday and I was going to make a cake based on the first ever cake wreck I saw--Lady Cassandra O'Brien Dot Delta Seventeen! I had my sheet cake (in carrot) all set up on the counter, and the first layer of icing on, when my sister called to wish me a happy birthday. We got talking and I wandered off. When I came back, my three year-old was standing over the cake shoving randomly-grabbed handfuls into his mouth. I shrieked in horror, realized immediately that my limited skills were not going to fix this, and ended up with a lumpy, crumby lopsided birthday cake with random holes in it. WORST BIRTHDAY EVER!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterknitwit

The Doctor!
This has got to be my favorite Sunday post to date, so rare to find so many Doctor Who fans in the states!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMary

I love it! I love Doctor Who! I agree that gingerbread is very cake like.

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNintendo Floosie

We are HUGE Dr. Who? fans, this post was wonderful! I have an autistic son who for some reason grabbed onto Dr. Who and is obsessed, and he really enjoyed all the cakes as well. There is a flickr group just for dr who cakes! Check it out.

Love, love, love this post! Hubby and I used to spend Saturday evening date nights together watching the good Doctors.

We named our first born Nyssa. :o)

As 9 would say, "FanTAStic!" What a great post! I'm looking forward to seeing the new Who next year.

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHomebody

Yay, a whole post on Who cakes! Yummy, and thanks for collecting them all together! Love the cutesie one with the scarf in the door.

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterkikimama

As someone who was raised on Doctor Who (and Red Dwarf) since I was 5, I'm glad to see that you included some of the Old Who, as well as the New. I wish there could be a Master cake (preferably Richard Delgado-themed), although all I can think of is eating his head, which is not very pleasant. (Although one could eat his TARDIS when it was shaped as a clock, I suppose.)

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter~ L. K.

This post makes me ridiculously happy. Thanks, Jen!!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I LOVE the Dalek cakes...I just love Daleks!

August 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNokomis Snape

Aw, neat! Dr. Who cakes that don't suck! Kudos x2 to the folks who put so much effort into making edible replicas of everyone's faveorite Timelord! (And to Jen, who is so wonderful for posting them! GEEKS UNITE!)
